Sequential Take 5 - Technical Appendix
Additional Technical Details for the Take 5
Globals Menu Setup:
Go into Globals and adjust your Velocity Sensitivity and Aftertouch Sensitivity. They come from the factory set to 1 for each, which is appropriate if you are using a club to hit the keys, but if you are of the homo sapian species, you'll probably want to adjust these values up significantly. I recommend:
Velocity Sensitivity: 4
Aftertouch Sensitivity: 6
You can adjust these to your taste, but the above values give a good range for standard playing.
DC to Osc Octave (Course Tuning)
+/-24 DC Value = +/- One Octave
This is the same scaling that most other Seq Instruments use.
+1 = +50 cents (Half a Semitone)
+2 = +1 Semitone
+4 = +M2
+6 = +m3
+8 = +M3
+10 = +P4
+14 = +P5
+16 = +m6
+18 = +M6
+20 = +m7
+22 = +M7
+24 = +1 Octave
+38 = +1 Oct + P5
+48 = +2 Octaves
+62 = +2 Oct + P5
+72 = +3 Octaves
........etc........
Voice Spread
With full Modulation Amount Applied (+/-127), the Voice Spread output maxes out around +/- 63 output value currently
Voice 1: (+0 No Offset)
Voice 2: (+38 DC equivalent)
Voice 3: (-38 DC equivalent)
Voice 4: (+63 DC equivalent)
Voice 5: (-63 DC equivalent)
The general methodology of this mod source is good, but would be better if it was scaled to the full range of Mod Values, to match DC source... currently, it outputs a sort of compressed range of values. It would be better to be able to accomplish "full offsets" to things like Panning Destination... if you crank up Voice Spread currently, you can't achieve full / hard panning of alternate voices. It would be nice if at full value, it uses the entire range, and then you can always scale down the amount for smaller values.
Also, rearranging the order of the offsets would be beneficial to more organic / natural sound designs.
Specific Feature Request / Change Request: Scale current value range 2x of current output to:
V1: +0
V2: +76
V3: -76
V4: +127
V5: -127
Or rearranged slightly: (This would be the optimal setup for this mod source)
V1: +0
V2: +76
V3: -127
V4: -76
V5: +127
Allow Multiple Mod Slots to Add Up
I don't understand why its not possible to have two mod slots setup the same and have those values added together... is there any downside to allowing this? Or alternatively, allowing an extra mod slot with DC > Mod Amount and use that to boost values beyond a single mod slot can achieve. This is helpful in random sound design situations... have run across it many times over the past few years with Seq instruments. Not sure if there's a reason why its not allowed currently, but this would allow for workarounds of this above issue, as well as others where additional scale is needed.
Note Number Modulation Pivot Key
Scales from bottom G note at -1 Octave
Bit of a strange choice... different than other Seq Keyboards... They all vary in which key is the pivot point. My preference would be to always scale up from the lowest selectable key (in this case that would be F at -2 oct)... or scale up from C0, like on Prophet Rev2. Having the pivot point in the middle of the keyboard makes sound design harder, as notes below the pivot point scale in the opposite direction (bi-polar)
Feature requests:
1. Possibility for more banks... Banks 9-16 are currently not used / inaccessible. That's existing UI empty space that is begging for at least 128 more patch locations, or 256 more, if you have Factory 9-16 and User 9-16 available.
2. Add Per Key Voice Allocation
3. The OLED screen doesn't give any feedback to parameter values from knobs, which surprised me... Have grown accustomed to this on other Sequential synths (like Rev2, Pro3, and others), and its one of the things I really like for fine tuning sounds. Also, for comparing with existing settings. For instance, if you bring up a patch, and want to make small changes from current sound / parameter positions, there's no OLED screen feedback for what previous values are or current. As a feature request, please provide some feedback on the OLED.
4. Adjust Voice Spread source to use the full range of values, rather than a compressed range. (you can always scale down in the mod matrix, but there's no way to scale up)
5. In the Mod Matrix, allow multiple mod slots targeting the same destination to be added up, or alternatively, allow the Destination Mod Slots to add to the target mod slot, beyond its current max limit.
